Portraits 2014 -2017

Using the ancient subject of portraiture with a new intention, this series of drawings is portraying contemporary artist whose work or persona has influenced mine in a way or another. Thoughtful, engaged men and women – established artists, emerging artists, artists friends – are the subjects of my current dedication.

Some of the artist I’m painting are famous, and their faces can be seen ubiquitously in numerous photographs, others are not very well known by a mainstream audience. My interest goes beyond one of the main functions of the portrait– producing a likeness – allowing you to see them not only as an individual, but as signifying pervasive features of our cultural environment. Which is to say, it is not just a portrait but what can be called a personal survey of contemporary art history. The figure in history is what matters.
